Celebrating diversity at our home

At Kewarra, acknowledging, accepting and celebrating diversity in our home is an important part of our philosophy. We endeavour to ensure that every resident feels safe, supported, loved, and nurtured in their home and amongst our community.

Our home supports a personalised and tailored approach to care, where our dedicated team will sit down with new residents upon entrance to the home and get to know them so that we can tailor particular activities and events in our lifestyle program.

Our dedicated lifestyle team work hard to prepare a range of fun, interesting and diverse activities that are of interest to residents. This is everything from cultural days, to reminiscing on past travels, and everything in between.

Maria, Leisure and Lifestyle Coordinator at Kewarra Aged Care tells us that the home hosts numerous international themed days through morning teas and other events to encourage awareness and discussion. ‘Everyone is different from different backgrounds, and it is an opportunity to appreciate and celebrate other cultures,’ says Maria.

The lifestyle program ‘involve input from residents to ensure they are resident focused and culturally specific,’ she says. ‘Staff inclusiveness in the program encourage community understanding of our current resident cultural needs and differences.’

Kewarra Aged Care resident, Margaret Tussel (Betty) moved to the home in September 2023 and tells us what diversity means to her. ‘Diversity means different people with different cultures (how they were brought up),’ says Betty. ‘It is important that we accept it and mix in, we have to integrate, or it doesn’t work.’

When asked what makes her feel welcomed and supported at the home, Betty tells us, ‘All people that work here care about us,’ she says. ‘They always ask how I am, and we are looked after.’
