Choosing an aged care home

Considering aged care for a loved one who needs additional support is a significant and sometimes difficult decision for families. So how do you decide where’s best for you at an emotional and challenging time?

One of the best places to start is by finding out if your provider meets the standards that are in place to protect you and your loved one.

Every aged care provider is required to meet government regulations and standards to protect the safety, health, wellbeing, and quality of life for people using aged care services. ‘Compliance’ is the process of ensuring providers meet these requirements.

How can I tell if an aged care home has any compliance issues?

Visit the Australian Government myagedcare website and use the  Find a provider tool to search for aged care homes.

You can look up an individual home, or search using postcode, to see the Service Compliance Rating for each aged care home in the search results.

This allows you to:

  • View the overall Service Compliance Rating

  • See how a provider is performing

  • Compare the performance of different aged care homes.

The non-compliance checker is another helpful tool to see if a home has been identified as not meeting requirements.

Finding a home that meets the requirements is just the first step, meeting with the manager of the home is important to ensure that your values and requirements are aligned with what’s on offer.
